Approaching
Patterson Mountain from the west, hikers would park at the
Flagpole Hill trailhead (see Flagpole Hill dayhike for driving
instructions). The trail leads south along Taylor Valley
Road for 250 feet. Bear left off the road and enter a recently
logged area. At “Logging Road #1” bear right
and follow it through a large clearing. Stay on “Logging
Road #1” for another mile by following blue blazes
at forks and you will reach the top of Hawkins Mountain
(el. 2370’). Hawkins Mountain is the highest point
on the Cross-Rivendell Trail in Vermont. To continue, bear
left off “Logging Road #1” and descend heavy
brush. In 0.1 miles, turn left and cross “Logging
Road #2” and go straight onto skid trail that heads
SE. Be sure to follow blue blazes here, as this is a tricky
spot. 0.3 miles below Hawkins summit you will reach “Logging
Road #3.” Follow this SE, climbing over a ridge for
0.1 miles, then bear left off “Logging Road #3.”
Follow short switchbacks to descend a heavily logged slope
with views to the East. 0.7 miles from the summit, you will
reach Van Dyke Road (class IV, not driveable). Turn right
onto road for 100 yards , then turn left onto Moody Swamp
Road (also class IV) to descend to the bottom of the hill.
Turn left (NE) and cross Old City Brook. Climb NE for 0.4
miles. Cross a logging road and climb steeply to the first
summit of Patterson Mountain. Continue on, descend and climb
again SE to a clearing just below the East Summit of Patterson
Mountain (el. 2290’) with a fine view of Mount Cube.
This land is part of Vershire’s Patterson Mountain
Forest, donated by the Drew Family in 1985. You can return
to Taylor Valley Road (3.3 miles) or if you are hiking through
to Chamberlain Hill Road, the trail continues along the
left edge of the clearing and then descends 1.4 miles, following
the Sally Drew Trail to a trailhead at the east base of
Patterson Mountain. See below for more details.
